Getting to Debrecen
Debrecen, the second largest city in Hungary, is located in the eastern part of the country, on the Hungarian Great Plain, close to the Romanian border.
For more information, check the Wikipedia page of Debrecen.
Debrecen has an international airport (Debrecen International Airport, DEB, https://www.debrecenairport.com/en) from which, for example, Lufthansa operates flights to and from Munich. The scheduled flights related to the conference date: Wed, 24 Jun (LH1686) and Sun, 28 Jun (LH1687). It is also an option to book a flight to Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (BUD), and from there travel to Debrecen.
To get to Debrecen from the Budapest Airport, there are several options.
1. Take the 200E bus departing from Terminal 2 of the airport and go to Ferihegy Station (Ferihegy Vasútállomás, ~12 min ride). Bus tickets can be purchased from vending machines at the airport or online (normal ticket and not the special airport ticket for 100E). Important: Validate your ticket on the bus to avoid fine! At Ferihegy Station you can buy tickets mainly from vending machines or online. There are Intercity (IC), fast (gyors / sebes) and normal (személy) trains. For faster trains you need to pay also supplement fee / seat reservation besides the normal ticket. The train ride takes c.a. 2.5 to 3 hours to Debrecen.
2. Similar to the first one, but take the 200E bus from the airport and go to Kőbánya-Kispest Station (Kőbánya-Kispest Vasútállomás, ~20 min ride). Here you can also find ticket offices and information working all days. This is perhaps a safer option for people first time in Hungary. Bus ticket and train ticket details are the same as for option 1. The train ride takes c.a. 2.5 to 3 hours to Debrecen.
3. If you would like to do a sight-seeing in Budapest, you may want to go to the city center from the airport first, and than you can take a train from the Nyugati Railway Station (Nyugati Pályaudvar). Take the 100E bus from the airport and go to Deák Ferenc tér. Beware, you need a different ticket for this bus than for 200E or any other normal buses, metros or trams in Budapest. This is already in the city center and close to the Nyugati Station. After sight-seeing you can take the same trains from the Nyugati Station as above to Debrecen. The train ride takes c.a. 2.5 to 3 hours.
4. Ordering airport transfer online in advance. There are several airport shuttle companies offering transfer to various cities in Hungary. This option may be expensive for just one person but can be reasonable if you come in a group and order together.
Here are two possible airport shuttle companies just for your information.
